Proposed Walgreens Continues to Gain Widespread Community Disapproval

Fairport, NY – January 14, 2007 – Fairport residents demonstrated their growing unrest and dissatisfaction with Mayor Fritz May and his support of a proposed Walgreens for the Village by turning out in high numbers to a Village board meeting.

Due to a turnout that exceeded the capacity of the boardroom Mayor May was forced to reschedule the public hearing to 7:00pm, January 28th in the cafetorium at the Johanna Perrin Middle School on Potter Place.

“By supporting the Walgreens proposal Mayor Fritz May has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the better interest of this community,” said Susan Davis, PDC leader and former candidate for the Monroe County Legislature.  “His inability to foresee the importance of this issue to Village residents just further supports the fact that the Mayor has lost touch with the values of the community he is supposed to serve.”

Craig DeLancey, a concerned Village resident, said:

“This project is simply wrong for the Village.  Republican Mayor Fritz May has supported the project, saying, “We can’t be afraid of development.  We can’t be afraid of growth. We can’t stagnate.” But, this project is just the opposite of that: it represents a step backwards, a reduction in growth, and economic stagnation.”

DeLancey went on further to say, “Fairport will grow and develop if it builds upon its strengths as a historic, walkable canal town.  The Village will lose all its advantages if it gives that up and becomes like the other commercial districts around the Village.”

A developer is seeking a special permit to construct a 9800 sq ft Walgreens on the corner of Route 250 and Church Street, which would require the destruction of the Exxon gas station and two houses at that corner in the Village of Fairport.
